"sewing is easier than it seams"

Why are quilts so expensive?

The reason is because of all the factors that come into play – all ofthe fabric for both the front and back, thread, batting, cutting and ironingthe fabric, and the labor to put it all together. They are labor-intensiveworks of art and the price really doesn’t reflect living wages, but ratherthe true cost of raw materials and custom craftsmanship. For instance, for just the labor, a Queen-size quilt can take between40 to 70+ hours depending on the complexity of the pattern.

I use only 100% cotton fabric, high-grade/durable thread, and either
cotton, wool, or bamboo batting.

I buy from quilt stores and online, such as Etsy. A good amount of
time, whether buying, on-line or driving to multiple stores, can add up
quickly. I’m very selective about the colors and how they work with each
other - I sometimes travel to an adjoining state to purchase, but that is
rare!!

Depending on the size, there are options. If it is a wall quilt, a light
dusting is all it will need, if that. If it is a baby quilt, a throw, or a twin size, washing it on a very
delicate setting with a delicate soap is best. To dry, a delicate dryer
setting or hanging to dry is best. If the quilt is bigger, depending on the
barrel size of your washer, a full could fit. Anything larger I suggest using
a dry cleaner that WASHES the quilt and air dries it with blowers. A bed
quilt shouldn’t need to be washed often; avoid food and drink, and pets’ nails
as they may catch on the stitches. Remember, this is a custom piece of art
and should be handled as such.

For small wall quilts I use command strips. Depending how wide, 2-3
should work. For larger hanging quilts, I use a FLAT, 1” wide curtain rods and super
power circular magnets. I adhere the magnet on the wall with a command
strip under each one. 3-4 should suffice. Slip your FLAT curtain rod into
the sewn-on pocket on the top of the backside, and then put the curtain
rod, with the quilt hanging from it, onto the magnets. Check for alignment
and, voila! done and, no holes in your wall!!
